Two performers acting as Cuquita The Cuban Doll (Romagoza's alter-ego) stand still bearing simulated penises. The public action is part of an ongoing series of performances that raise critical questions about the exclusion and erasure of the Latina artist in the diaspora. As the artist writes, “The art system does not represent the Latina artist in all its diversity of cultures, identities, origins, and stories. Each new performance and public action will add a new Cuquita The Cuban Doll, creating the multiplication and expansion of the Cuquitas confronting various art institutions.”

Gyun Hur: To hold gently

Atop the Hill of Graves, Hur quietly performs mournful gestures of labor while cradling new life within her body. She will sit alone for three hours pulling apart yellow silk flowers in a meditation of the loss of lives caused by COVID-19, among whom were her doorman and neighbors in her residential building in Brooklyn. Hur invites the audience to sit twenty feet from her during the performance in quietude as the Harlem Chamber Players perform George Walker’s String Quartet No. 1 and Florence Price’s String Quartet in G major as part of Green-Wood’s A Lament for Troubled Times concert series. The performance will take place near the intersection of Meadow and Garland Avenues.

In this performance, the artist lip-syncs to America, the iconic song from the musical West Side Story, detailing life in America as a Puerto Rican. Unearthing the asymmetrical power relations that plague the island, this 1961 recording is interrupted by voices from past and present: the current president of the United States giving a speech following Hurricane María in Puerto Rico in 2017; Pedro Pietri, a member of the latino youth group Young Lords, reciting his poem Puerto Rican Obituary (1969); and a recording of Hawaiian activist Haunani-Kay Trask speaking about stolen lands from 1990.

Iván Sikic: Conscious Oblivion

Conscious Oblivion is a durational performance by Iván Sikic, co curated by Katya Grokhovsky and Harry Weil, presented as part of Green-Wood‘s annual Día de los Muertos celebrations‪ in conjunction with The Immigrant Artist Biennial 2020: Here, Together! For four hours, Sikic will clean and tend to the graves of immigrants from the Global South who are buried in Public Lot 14964 (next to the Prospect Park West entrance) during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Afterward, he will say aloud the names of the deceased as Tariq Allen, a Brooklyn based trumpet player, performs a jazz funeral tune. Sikic’s work pays tribute to life, labor, and the sacrifices of generations of immigrant communities who now rest at Green-Wood.
