Brooklyn Ballet & The Immigrant Artist Biennial
Art, Cocktails, Conversation & Dance
November 22nd 2022 7pm
Fotografiska New York
281 Park Ave S, New York,
NY 10010

The evening featured Unnatural Surrounding performed by immigrant and other dancers from the Brooklyn Ballet against the backdrop of Utopia Process (2018), a video piece by The Immigrant Artist Biennial alumni artist Chen Wang. As Brooklyn Ballet dancers enliven the work in clusters throughout the space, the video uses surreal sets and costumes to splice utopian and dystopian fictional digital spaces. The juxtaposition and melting of these dark yet fantastical scenes acts as a playful mirror to the artist’s rejection of societal norms while constructing a new vision of gender and sexuality.

Dancers: Audrey Borst, ChrissyAnn Carpenter, Bobby “Anime” Major, Aoi Ohno, and Ladell “Mr. Ocean” Thomas.

The event coincided with Fotografiska New York’s largest exhibition to date, make BELIEVE, presenting the photographic oeuvre of David LaChapelle, who is deeply inspired by dance.

About the Artists

Working with various media and materials like sculpture, installation, painting. printmaking, and photography, Negin Mahzoun focuses on themes of observation, memory and gender in the context of her personal experiences. Her artistic practice draws from layers of history, literature, and the perspective of self portraiture to highlight the cultural identity of women’s bodies as an object and subject. Working primarily with canvas, treads, paper, and water-based pigments, Mahzoun creates a specific space for women to share life experience secluded from the assumptions and oppressive laws governed by society.

Tooraj Khamenehzadeh treats the production of art as a way of exploration, intuition, subjective experience, and immediate perception of reality. I’m Not a Song to Be Sung is a single-channel video representing a multi- channel video installation that concerns a generation of Iranians whose lives have been affected by long years of war, international sanctions, and civil and social pressures after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Each character was asked to stay underwater and recite lines from a Persian poem by Iranian poet Shamlou in English. The duration of each reading ranges from several seconds to over a minute.
